We learned:

That our daughter could make pies from scratch including the puree all by herself.
The preparation day goes by so fast it's 5 pm before I realize I'm still in my jammies.

It's best not to "pin" whilst the pies are in the oven.
Packaged pecans don't come already toasted.

How to stuff and tie a turkey with help from the internet.

Tip: If you're in a pinch, white cotton yarn does the trick.
Unless you want your turkey tasting like burnt roasted marshmallows it's best to scrape pecan pie
filling off the oven floor.
Tension can be broken if somebody imitates the way Fulton says, "Tortilla!"
The turkey cooks a lot faster if you just leave it alone and head to the park.
Mama needs to exercise after trying to chase the turkeys in a game of "Pilgrims and Turkeys"
Burnt pumpkin muffins for Thanksgiving breakfast..."Tortilla!"
Bernadette came up with "Turkeys and Pilgrims". One person was the pilgrim and had to try to catch the turkeys and take them back to the barn. Somehow it morphed into the poor turkeys being led to their slaughter.
I had so many plans for elaborate Thanksgiving games. In the end, I just grabbed a rock from the front yard and had Bernadette write "Plymouth" on it. Then at the park, one person would hide the rock and whoever found "Plymouth Rock" got to say what they were thankful for.
It was such a beautiful relaxing day. I thought I'd miss the chaos of having noisy, fun extended family over but what I realized is that I loved and cherished being alone together as a family even more. We needed to be alone after the crazy year we've had that started in September of 2010 when we stuck the For Sale sign out in front of our house. The meal was delicious even though not everything turned out picture perfect. It was awesome to be eating at 11:30 and the kitchen cleaned up and closed by 1pm. It was so nice to just sit around and wonder, "What do we want to do now?" And answer that question with a family trip to Lake Jackson to see Puss In Boots. My most favorite part of the day was spending time horsing around at the park. I loved the last minute games we came up with. I loved being outside praising God and thanking Him for our many blessings. I simply loved being a family alone.
