Needle And Thread: Fabric Melon Balls

needle and thREAD

I'm finishing up with a project I had originally intended as a Christmas present in time for Dominic's birthday tomorrow.  I had to put the fabric balls aside back in December  to focus on Christmas gifts for extended family that were ready in time for Valentine's Day.  (Do you see a recurring pattern of behavior here?) I used Purl Soho's pattern paying no attention whatsoever to fabric placement.  I had hoped that adding two strips of linen to each ball would give them that Zakka appearance I love.  Instead I think it makes the maker look thoughtless...because I was.  My only concern was making sure I didn't have two matching fabric pieces touching.  I'm also beginning to wonder if there's an art to stuffing because in the end they look and roll  more like cantaloupes than round balls.   I'm sure Dominic won't mind.  If my boys get a kick out of rolling real melons like they're balls, I'm sure they'll love these balls that look like over-ripe melons.  In fact I know so...Dominic smiled when he saw his birthday present on my craft table.

I've been glancing at books without really committing to any this past week.  I pulled out The Meghan Method again to guide us as we begin the process of talking with my brother about designing our home.  It's arguably the best book on decorating I've ever come across. I also want to get back to finishing up Consoling the Heart of Jesus.

Does anybody have any favorite time management books?  That topic has been on my mind a lot lately.   The fact that I forgot to order almond flour for his birthday cake  and still want to make a birthday crown, bunting and ornament before Dominic's birthday tomorrow indicates how much help I need in this department.

  1. LOVE your fabrics - the white doesn't look thoughtless at all :o).

  2. I LOVE the melon balls, Elizabeth! I've often seen this type of project, but am intimidated by 3-D! Nicely done. And how meaningful that you've made Dominic's present, not bought it.

I got stalled a bit into the second part of Consoling the Heart of Jesus. I wrote some more, but then deleted it. I will email you my thoughts.

These fabric balls are adorable. I've had that pattern bookmarked for AGES. One of these days...

You are so kind reading and commenting on my blog. Thank you!

I love these fabric balls. I remember making similar ones for my children when they were babies.

    God bless!
